Mock DUI program educates students about dangers of drunk driving

READING, Pa. — Penn State Berks Police Services will hold a Mock DUI program titled “Reality Check” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, on Clary Drive, located behind the turf athletic field.

The scenario will begin with a motor vehicle accident involving one vehicle and four students. Initial reports will indicate that alcohol may be involved. There will be one entrapped "victim" and one "fatality." In addition to Western Berks Emergency Management Services and the Spring Township Fire Department, the Berks County Coroner’s Office will respond to the fatality.

“Our goal is to remind our students of the reality and consequences of their decisions related to alcohol consumption,” explained Penn State Berks Police Chief Kevin Rudy. “We are grateful for the involvement and support of local and county emergency services personnel who were instrumental with the organization and implementation of this community service educational and training event.”

Three Penn State Berks Resident Assistants (RAs) along with one resident student will play the role of the victims. Educational pamphlets will be distributed to attendees. Penn State Berks Police Services student patrol and campus counselors will provide additional assistance.

Following the program, a reception will be held in Ivy Lounge in the Woods Residence Center for participants.

The following agencies will be involved in the program: Berks County Coroner’s Office, North Central Highway Safety Network, Spitlers Towing, Spring Township Fire Department, and Western Berks Ambulance Association.

This event is funded through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Grant that the campus received for the proposal titled “PLCB Grant to Reduce Underage and Dangerous Drinking.”
