UNIVERISTY PARK, Pa. — Shelley Haffner, RNC, infectious disease manager/campus liaison at Penn State University Health Services, was presented with a Get Smart Volunteer Award for Leadership Skills in Public Health on Tuesday, March 21, at the Capitol Rotunda, Harrisburg.

The award, presented by Pennsylvania Physician General Dr. Rachel Levine on behalf of the Pennsylvania Get Smart Program, recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in public health and antibiotic stewardship.

The Pennsylvania Get Smart Program, headed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Pennsylvania Consortium for Antimicrobial Stewardship (PCAS), aims to decrease the need for unnecessary antibiotic use by preventing illnesses before they occur. Recipients of the Volunteer Award are nominated by PCAS committee members and are recognized for their outstanding collaborations and innovations that promote public health above and beyond the responsibilities of an individual entity or institution.

Haffner was formally recognized for her contributions during the Get Smart Program annual spring reception, an event that honors Volunteer Award recipients and Pennsylvania youth who have received awards in the organization’s annual Kids’ Art Contest.
