ALTOONA, Pa. — Penn State Altoona offers scores and results from varsity athletics held Feb. 10-17. 

Baseball:

Eastern Mennonite University 7, Penn State Altoona 2

Penn State Altoona 6, Eastern Mennonite University 4

Penn State Altoona first-year interim head coach RJ Barnard picked up his first win as a collegiate head coach in the Lions’ 6-4 win over Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Men’s basketball:

La Roche College 86, Penn State Altoona 66

Penn State Altoona 93, Pitt-Bradford 87

With their win over Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, Feb. 15, the Lions clinched their first home AMCC Tournament game since the 2007-08 season. Penn State Altoona will host a first round AMCC playoff contest on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the Adler Gym.

Men’s swimming:

Penn State Altoona men’s swimming finished in fourth place with a total of 270 points after the four-day AMCC Championships, held Feb. 8-11 at Penn State Behrend. Freshman swimmer Allen Shmurak (Newtown, Pennsylvania/Council Rock North) was selected the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Division III South Region Rookie of the Week for his performance in the AMCC Championships, which included setting a new Lions team record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.24.

Men’s volleyball:

Sophomore libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Samuel Clemens) was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for the third week in a row on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Rivera-Berrios totaled 22 digs (3.67 digs per set) against Lasell and Southern Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Elmira College Invitational.

Women’s basketball:

Penn State Altoona women’s basketball continued an annual fundraising tradition this winter, as the team raised money in support of the fight against breast cancer. During the Lady Lions’ Pink Zone Night on Wednesday, Feb. 15, the team made a donation to the UPMC Altoona Foundation to support the hospital’s breast cancer awareness, prevention and treatment efforts.

Women’s bowling:

Penn State Altoona women’s bowling went 2-8 in the AMCC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12, at Richland Lanes in Johnstown. Senior bowler Brea Suchonic (Butler, Pennsylvania/Butler) was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance in the conference championships, during which she averaged 160.2 pins per game in Saturday’s traditional team format matches and 8.38 pins per frame in Sunday’s baker matches.

Penn State Altoona women’s swimming came in fifth place with 270 total points by the end of the four-day AMCC Championships, which were held Feb. 8-11 at Penn State Behrend. Freshman swimmer Emily Booz (Berwyn, Pennsylvania/Conestoga) was selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference’s Division III South Region Swimmer of the Week and Rookie of the Week for her performance in the AMCC Championships. The Lady Lions’ freshman had a hand in setting five new team records during the conference championships, including the 200-yard backstroke, in which she came in first place with a time of 2:11.94.
