Zoller Gallery presents 'Canon Fodder'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State School of Visual Arts (SoVA) is pleased to present "Canon Fodder," on display in the Edwin W. Zoller Gallery, Jan. 30-Feb. 10, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 6.

This exhibition, curated by art history doctorate Aaron Ziolkowski, addresses the relationship between practicing artists and the discipline of art history. The canon can offer rich material for exploration but equally this embarrassment of riches can stifle independent creativity.

For the exhibition, a mixture of undergraduates, Master of Fine Arts candidates, and SoVA alumni considered an artist or work of art they find personally important and made a piece in response. Others treated the theme more broadly, concerning their relationship to history and their relative desire to enter or position themselves in opposition to the canon. By bringing together those who make with those that categorize and critique, "Canon Fodder" aims to forge new connections and warm the occasionally chilly relations between the two.
