UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Sporting events and concerts aren’t the only reasons people flock to the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus. On Dec. 8, the arena will be packed with students proudly displaying and demonstrating their projects during the fall 2016 College of Engineering Design Showcase.

The showcase, which will take place from 1 to 3 p.m., is the culmination of a semester-long effort by engineering students to design prototypes and remedies to real-world challenges posed by industry clients.

The event is free and open to the public.

Engineering students from the senior capstone design courses in biological engineering, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering design, engineering science and mechanics, industrial engineering, materials science and mechanical engineering will participate in the showcase.

Projects and posters will be judged for awards sponsored by BP and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Attendees are encouraged to vote for the project they hope to see win the People’s Choice Award.

The event will also feature first-year students in EDSGN 100 Introduction to Engineering Design, who will display their client-driven design project, sponsored by Chevron. Students were tasked with designing an opportunity to improve upon common industry practices in shale development while balancing safety, profitability, sustainability and stewardship of the environment.

Students in EDSGN 130 Architectural Graphics and CAD will present their final design project, a museum dedicated to the American Industrial Revolution in Centre County. The overall building design should demonstrate students’ understanding of some of the regional environmental impacts during this period.

A variety of local and national firms and government agencies sponsored this semester’s projects.
