UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Deepak Agrawal, a doctoral student in industrial engineering, will be receiving two awards at the Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) 2016 Annual Meeting in Nashville on Nov. 14.

Agrawal will be receiving the Judith Liebman Award and INFORMS Volunteer Service Award at the Meritorious Level. The awards were designed to recognize INFORMS members who have made exceptional and sustained contributions to their university’s INFORMS chapter.

“Deepak has played a pivotal role in the resurgence of the Penn State INFORMS chapter,” said Uday Shanbhag, faculty adviser of the chapter. “He showed enormous initiative in organizing workshops, speakers and improving the chapter as a whole.”

Agrawal has been involved in the Penn State chapter of INFORMS since 2012. He was the chapter president from 2015 to 2016 and is currently serving a two-year term as a student chapter representative on the INFORMS Subdivisions Council.

“INFORMS has helped me grow as an engineering professional since my first day of involvement,” said Agrawal. “I have enjoyed giving back to an organization that has helped me so much. It is an honor to be recognized for my work with Penn State INFORMS.”

The Penn State chapter of INFORMS holds industry networking events and workshops to prepare members for careers after graduation. Industry professionals also give presentations about the latest news in industry and offer advice to chapter members.

Agrawal will also be accepting the 2016 Student Chapter Annual Award on behalf of the Penn State chapter. Penn State is one of 10 university chapters receiving the award at the Cum Laude Level.

“Over the past year there has been a renewed vibrancy in the Penn State chapter,” said Shanbhag. “This has been felt in a doubling of membership and our increased presence at the INFORMS annual meeting.”

INFORMS is an industry professionals’ network organization serving analytics professionals and operations researchers worldwide. Members include educators, scientists, students, managers, analysts and consultants.
