Armstrong named director-elect of American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery

HERSHEY, Pa. — Dr. April Armstrong, professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the Penn State Bone and Joint Institute, has been elected as director-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

The board consists of 21 members, which includes 12 active directors, six senior directors, two directors-elect, and one public member director. All members serve one 10-year term, while the public member director serves a three-year term.

Armstrong specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where she has worked since 2003. Orthopedics This Week named her one of the top shoulder surgeons in the country. Her current roles include vice chair of clinical affairs and quality for the Department of Orthopaedics and associate designated institutional official for the Graduate Medical Education Office.

The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery was founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, independent organization to serve the best interests of the public and the medical profession. These interests are achieved through the ABOS by establishing standards for the education of orthopaedic surgeons. These standards are evaluated by the ABOS through examinations and practice evaluations.
