UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Lion Ambassadors will hold their annual Guard the Lion Shrine event during Homecoming Weekend.

Guard the Lion Shrine will take place from 9-11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, at the Nittany Lion Shrine. The event celebrating Homecoming is based off of the tradition of guarding the shrine from defacement from rival universities, which started after the 1966 game against Syracuse.

“This is one of those events that students and alumni can look forward to every year because it’s something that they both can connect to,” Project Leader Jackson Houser said. “So many aspects of this University are based on long-standing traditions, so it’s a really special event knowing that students can become part of a tradition while alumni can come back and celebrate it with them.”

At the event, which is free and open to the public, there will be free food, live music from “The New Feel,” performances from Pennharmonics and Urban Dance Troupe, activities, photos at the shrine, and more. Special guests Sue Paterno and the Nittany Lion will also be in attendance.

The Penn State Lion Ambassadors are the student alumni corps of the Penn State Alumni Association who aim to communicate the University’s history, personality and traditions to students, alumni and friends through tours and programming. Founded in 1982, the Lion Ambassadors serve as an important facet of student outreach for the Alumni Association.
