Rieck named assistant VP and assistant dean for Undergraduate Education

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Alan Rieck has been named assistant vice president and assistant dean for Undergraduate Education at Penn State, effective Nov. 1. He succeeds Mary Beth Crowe, who will retire from the University on Dec. 31, 2016, after 36 years of service.

Rieck comes to Penn State from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he served as the chair of the Department of Music and Theatre Arts and professor of choral music and music education. He holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction (music education), as well as master of music and bachelor of music degrees in music education, all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In his new role, Rieck will lead undergraduate research initiatives offered through the Office of Undergraduate Education, including the University’s annual Undergraduate Exhibition. He will also collaborate with groups from across the University on broad issues concerning undergraduate education and provide leadership for strategic planning and communications for the unit.

At the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Rieck was involved in strategic planning, accreditation, and strengthening the student experience. He served on the University Council on Internationalization and Global Engagement, the University Planning Council, and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity Taskforce.

“Dr. Rieck brings a breadth of experience in strategic planning at the department, college, and university levels to our office," said Rob Pangborn, vice president and dean for Undergraduate Education. "His commitment to advancing student engagement through curricular and co-curricular opportunities will be a significant asset in enhancing the undergraduate experience at Penn State.”

“Growing the success of undergraduate students and collaborating with faculty who work with them will be my driving passion in this position," said Rieck. "I see my personal mission as facilitating the success of others.”

“As I explored this position, I was repeatedly impressed by the vision and the commitment to students and the community," Rieck added. "It is exciting to have the opportunity to work with dedicated faculty and administrators, along with students, to create 21st-century experiences that make the Penn State undergraduate experience even more dynamic and meaningful than it already is."
