Woskob Wall: A site-specific installation by Katie Bell

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Artist Katie Bell will visit the Woskob Family Gallery in State College, during which time she will design, create and install a site-specific installation on the Woskob Wall. Bell is the inaugural artist in this series, where visiting artists create temporary, site-specific installations for the dramatic, 25-foot high walls above the staircase to the gallery.

Bell’s visit is co-sponsored by the School of Visual Arts’ Painting Club and the John M. Anderson Endowed Lecture Series. She will be in State College sourcing materials and then designing and installing the piece from Oct. 3-10. The completion of the work will be marked by a celebratory reception, free and open to the public, from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10. Additionally, Bell will give a lecture about her work at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium, Palmer Museum of Art.

Bell lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Inspired by the process of home remodeling, she reworks domestic materials such as wallpaper, window blinds, linoleum and vinyl into sculptural paintings. Bell engages found objects, pastel colors, dynamic diagonals and clean lines to create large, explosive three-dimensional installations. During her 10-day stay in State College, Bell will collect found materials from building sites and scrap yards, reworking those into the final installation work. The Woskob Family Gallery is a contemporary art space in downtown State College that brings a cohesive and carefully curated program of exhibitions and events to central Pennsylvania. Run by Penn State’s College of Arts and Architecture, the gallery serves as a laboratory for exploring how the arts can catalyze creative place-making. The gallery’s mission is to forge new relationships between the University and local communities, increase the perception of downtown State College as a cultural destination, and spark new creative enterprises. Through partnerships with the borough, local government, and existing arts and cultural organizations, the gallery seeks a greater local investment in arts and culture projects.
