UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Necdet Serhat Aybat has been elected to the executive board of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Optimization Society. He will serve as the vice chair for nonlinear optimization.

Aybat, an assistant professor of industrial engineering, will begin his two-year term in January 2017.

The INFORMS Optimization Society has two goals: to promote the development and application of optimization methods and software tools for the solution of problems in operations research/management science; and to encourage the exchange of information among practitioners and scholars in the optimization area.

Aybat joined the faculty of the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in 2011. He recently received a six-figure National Science Foundation grant to design smart power grids that factor in uncertainty in energy demand and renewable energy production.

Aybat received his doctorate from Columbia University in 2011.

INFORMS is the largest society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research, management science and analytics. The mission of the society is to “… lead in the development, dissemination and implementation of knowledge, basic and applied research and technologies in operations research, analytics, the management sciences, and related methods of improving operational processes, decision-making and management.”
