UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Richard Alley, Evan Pugh University Professor of Geosciences and associate of the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute at Penn State, has received the 2016 Climate Communications Prize from the American Geophysical Union.
The award honors scientists who have made a significant contribution in promoting scientific literacy and fostering understanding of science-based values, according to the AGU website.
Alley is a renowned climate scientist and science communicator. He has received numerous awards for his research and his ability to translate his findings to the public.
He has hosted a television series on climate change, “Earth: The Operators’ Manual,” which originally aired on the Public Broadcasting System in 2011, and he has written two popular books. He regularly speaks with members of the media and often appears in news stories explaining climate science to broad audiences.
Alley will receive the award in December at the AGU’s fall meeting in San Francisco.
Alley has membership in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society (U.K.), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, and the Geological Society of America.
