UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Twitter community will join the Pennsylvania Department of State and the National Association of Secretaries of State to celebrate National Voter Registration Day with a Twitter Town Hall from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to join the Twitter Town Hall by following @PAStateDept and using the hashtags #CelebrateNVRD and #votesPA.
This year’s election will be the first time many Penn State students will have the opportunity to vote in a presidential election, and many students may not be aware that advanced registration is required to vote on Nov. 8. The event will offer information about online voter registration in Pennsylvania, but community members from any state are encouraged to ask questions. The voter registration deadline for Pennsylvania is Oct. 11. A state-by-state list of voter registration deadlines for the general election can be viewed here.
Deputy Secretary for Elections and Administration Marian K. Schneider will lead the Twitter Town Hall. A frequent lecturer and speaker on voting rights issues, Schneider has worked on election and voting rights issues for more than a decade. Her experience includes many aspects of election administration, candidate petitions, contested elections, and voting rights.
“National voter registration is a day to encourage people to participate in our democracy. We’ve made it easier and more convenient than ever to register to vote by launching online voter registration,” said Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf at the launch of Pennsylvania’s online voter registration system in 2015.
Penn State Undergraduate Education (@PSU_Undergrad) will lead the Twitter Town Hall conversation for the University, with further promotion from the Office of Social Media (@penn_state) and Penn State Student Affairs (@PennState411).
All community members are invited to participate.
Students are encouraged to ask questions about voter registration and the voting process.
