New certificate in digital learning design opens through Penn State World Campus

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A new online postbaccalaureate certificate in e-learning design from Penn State World Campus can help workforce and corporate trainers learn to design educational programs to fit their organizations’ needs.

The 12-credit certificate is being offered entirely online through Penn State World Campus. Courses will be taught by faculty from Penn State’s College of Education. Applications are now being accepted.

“Digital learning, and learning in general, exists through almost every walk of life now, and in particular, corporations, the government, and the military need professionals who can create learning resources for their employees,” said Josh Kirby, assistant professor of education and lead faculty member of the college’s learning, design and technology programs. “We’re teaching people how to conceptualize what effective digital learning should look like.”

The certificate delves into the heart of learning design with topics such as course design and development, emerging learning technologies, analyzing instructional problems and using course management systems. Students will learn to create learning resources through a variety of projects in the courses, and they will be tasked with developing and assessing the activities that will lead to learning success.

Penn State has been offering online educational programs through the World Campus since 1998. Its online graduate programs in education have been highly ranked by U.S. News and World Report over the past few years.

The certificate can serve as a stepping stone for those who would like to go on to complete a master’s degree in learning, design and technology offered online through Penn State World Campus. Those who complete the certificate must apply to the program, and upon acceptance, they may apply their credits toward the master’s degree.
