Groups join forces to gather school supplies for homeless children

Collection continues through Sept. 30

Pencils, pens, paper, calculators, erasers,  glue, notebooks and other items can be dropped off in collection boxes located throughout the campus through Sept. 30.   School supplies are being collected by the Penn State York Council on Family Relations (CFR), and the Human Development and Family Studies Affiliate Program Group (APG) of the Penn State York Alumni Society, and will be given to homeless children through Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness. Credit: Barbara Dennis / Penn StateCreative Commons

There’s still time to donate school supplies for children in need. The Penn State York Council on Family Relations (CFR) Club and the Human Development and Family Studies Affiliated Program Group (APG) of the Penn State York Alumni Society have joined forces with Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH), to help collect school supplies now through Sept. 30 at the campus.

“I chose to get our group involved in this drive because what makes a child more excited for school than new school supplies?’ said Shawnee Hostetter, Penn State York student and president of CFR. “No child should have that excitement taken away because they don’t have the things they need.  Collecting these items allows us to help and make a difference,” she said.

Pencils, pens, notebooks, paper, crayons, glue and other items can be dropped off in the collection boxes located in a variety of buildings on campus.

Supplies collected will be distributed through ECYEH, whose main goal is to ensure that all children and youth experiencing homelessness enroll, participate, and have the opportunity to succeed in school; ensure children and youth experiencing homelessness receive a free and appropriate public education on an equal basis with all other children in the state; and eliminate and/or reduce educational barriers through the use of local best practices, and the authorized activities of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act.
