Nationally, eight out of 10 college students drink alcohol. However, there’s a fine line between using and abusing.

Patricia Rutledge, professor of psychology at Allegheny College, will discuss her research on problematic drinking in college settings when the Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior returns to Penn State Behrend.

Her talk, “College Drinking 101:  What the Data Tell Us,” begins at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in room 117 of the college’s Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public.

Rutledge will provide an overview of college drinking, highlighting the data and addressing its practical implications. Her research focuses on problematic drinking in college and the risk factors and protective factors associated with it. She has published studies on 21st birthday drinking, physical activity and alcohol consumption among college students, heavy drinking among freshman and post-graduate students, alcohol-impaired driving and alcohol policy enforcement.

Rutledge earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Murray State University, and both a master’s and doctorate in psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. She has been a faculty member at Allegheny College since 2006.

“College Drinking 101: What the Data Tell Us” is hosted by Penn State Behrend’s B.A. and B.S. in Psychology degree programs and by the student Psychology Coalition with support from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Student Activity Fee and the CRMPPP certificate in Crime, Psychology, and Public Policy.
