HAZLETON, Pa. — Allen Koehler has been appointed director of admissions and financial aid at Penn State Hazleton, Chancellor Gary Lawler announced.

In his position, Koehler will provide leadership, direction and supervision for the admissions and financial aid departments. He is responsible for developing an annual recruitment and communication plan and implementing recruitment and student aid strategies, and will oversee the implementation of a variety of events and projects related to enrollment management.

“We are pleased to welcome Allen to the staff at Penn State Hazleton," Lawler said. "He brings with him innovative ideas for recruitment and retention strategies, along with a great deal of experience in working with various populations of students, particularly international students.”

In his career with college admissions departments, Koehler began the international recruitment program at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburg, New York, and Wagner College in Staten Island, New York.

“I’m really excited to lead the admissions and financial aid team,” he said. “International recruitment requires a strong grasp and application of data, which will be beneficial to me as director of admissions and financial aid. A data-driven approach is essential to helping us understand and meet the educational needs of high school students.”

With a recent change that moves up the timeline of the application deadline for federal college funding, Koehler wants to help students and their families become familiar with the financial aid process and the value of an education at Penn State Hazleton.

“Being a first-generation student, I know firsthand how overwhelming the admissions and financial aid process can be. It’s important for us to continue to work closely with families to ensure they understand the process and how it works for their individual student,” he said.

Koehler served as assistant director of international admissions and recruitment at Mount Saint Mary College and also held several roles in admissions at Wagner College.

He is completing his master’s degree from Northeastern University with a concentration in higher education administration this summer and holds a bachelor’s degree in international affairs from Wagner College.
