Medical Scientist Training Program reception to be held July 15

The MD/PhD Program at Penn State College of Medicine has been chosen to receive a National Institutes of Health-sponsored Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) Award. Only 47 programs out of about 90 nationally have received this award.

The MSTP Award addresses the need to develop physician-scientists who are well trained in basic, translational and clinical research. The award supports the MD/PhD program to train medical scientists interested in pursuing careers in biomedical research and academic medicine. The College of Medicine also provides support to ensure ongoing and future success of the program.

There are currently 53 students in the program, which spans four years of medical school and three to five years of biomedical research, resulting in the awarding of both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees to graduates of the program.

The Office of the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies will host a reception to launch the MSTP award from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on July 15 in the BMR Courtyard. If it rains, the reception will be held in Rotunda Café.

The program will include remarks by Dr. Robert Levenson, distinguished professor of pharmacology and neural and behavioral sciences, and Dr. Leslie Parent, vice dean for research and graduate studies and associate vice president for health sciences research, professor of medicine and microbiology and immunology, co-directors of the MD/PhD Program.
