UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The community is invited to join the Penn State Student Farm for “Art on the Acre,” a family-friendly event set for 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, at the one-acre farm, located near the intersection of Big Hollow and Fox Hollow roads.
The event will include tours, farm-fresh snacks, and flowerpot decorating. Tours will start every half hour, with the final tour starting at 5:30 p.m.
“We’ve planned this event as a continuation of the arts theme of the Central Pennsylvania Arts Festival, plus mid-July will be a great time for the community to come out and see everything we’re growing on the student farm,” said Alyssa Gurklis, who is working for the farm as a communications intern this summer.
Guests can lend a hand in helping to spruce up the farm by painting and stamping terracotta planters that will be used to beautify the site. Guests will also have the opportunity to paint and take home their own flowerpot.
“We’ll be making stamps from veggies, too, which is a fun way to combine gardening and art,” said Colin Casto, one of the farm’s summer production interns.
Clay pots, paint, brushes and vegetable stamps will be provided. Visitors are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and appropriate painting attire (paint smocks will be provided).
“We’re hoping to engage with current and prospective students, as well as with families and alumni who visit State College during Arts Fest weekend,” said Leslie Pillen, coordinator for the Sustainable Food Systems Program and student farm at Penn State.
This event is open to the entire community, including families and children.
