Engineering's Hannan, Monga honored for teaching excellence

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State College of Engineering faculty members John Hannan and Vishal Monga have been named recipients of the 2016 Joel and Ruth Spira Excellence in Teaching Award.

Established by the Lutron Foundation in honor of the company's founders, the award recognizes individuals who excel in the classroom by helping students learn, understand and apply the fundamentals of engineering.

Hannan joined Penn State as an assistant professor in 1992.

He currently serves as interim associate department head of computer science and engineering in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS).

Hannan's research interests lie in app development, programming language semantics and implementation, program analysis and verification, logic and computation and functional programming.

In 2002, he received the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society Outstanding Advising Award.

Monga is an associate professor of electrical engineering in the School of EECS.

A Penn State faculty member since 2009, he studies convex optimization methods in imaging, image processing and signal/image classification.

In 2015, Monga received a $500,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development award for a project to employ convex optimization theory and algorithms in signal and image processing in image classification and recognition, computational imaging and robust signal hashing.

Engineering science alumnus Greg Altonen, vice president of commercial product management at Lutron Electronics, presented the awards during a ceremony June 9 at The Nittany Lion Inn.
