UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s reputation for teaching and research ranks it 44th among universities worldwide in the recently released sixth annual Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings. Last year’s list ranked the University in the 61-70 tier.
The 2016 reputation rankings are based on 10,323 responses from 133 countries to an invitation-only survey carried out by Netherlands-based, academic publishing company Elsevier.
According to Times Higher Education (THE), the survey is the world's largest of its kind. The international survey takes a unique approach to data-gathering and analytics by directly engaging academics and researchers, who are asked to identify the institutions they consider to be the best in terms of research and teaching, both in specific regions and globally.

The reputation rankings also are included as part of the criteria for the annual World University Rankings published by THE each fall; Penn State ranked 75th internationally in 2015.
