Truck donated by FedEx delivers expanded opportunity for Penn College students

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Students in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s diesel equipment majors now have newer equipment on which to hone their craft, thanks to a graduate’s ongoing involvement with his alma mater. The donation of a 2006 Volvo truck was facilitated by Greg A. Moser, an alumnus of Penn College’s former diesel technology: Mack emphasis major. Based in Pocono Summit, Moser is a district fleet maintenance manager for FedEx Freight. He frequently recruits at campus career fairs and serves on Penn College’s Diesel Technology Advisory Committee.“This is huge for us,” said Mark E. Sones, a diesel equipment technology faculty member and one of Moser’s former instructors at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center. “This not only gives our students an additional work station, but also exposes students to EGR-era emissions and related systems.” EGR, or exhaust gas recirculation, is a method of reducing emissions from diesel and other engines. With institutional budgets stretched tighter, and the current shortage of qualified diesel technicians in the trucking industry, the donation benefits both FedEx and the School of Transportation & Natural Resources Technologies.“I talked with Mark a while back and he told me, ‘We sure could use some equipment,’” Moser said. “These types of things allow FedEx to help the school … and increases the number of qualified diesel techs in our industry.”Sones said the availability of well-maintained records from the truck’s days of hauling freight will only add to the students’ education.“This is nearly a million-mile truck,” he said. “FedEx took very good care of this vehicle, and students will be able to see everything that’s been serviced on it.”For more information about diesel majors within the School of Transportation & Natural Resources Technologies, visit www.pct.edu/diesel or call 570-327-4516.For more about Penn College, a national leader in applied technology education and workforce development, visit www.pct.edu, email admissions@pct.edu or call toll-free 800-367-9222.
