Communications faculty, staff honored for excellence

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Five faculty members, three faculty affiliates, three graduate students and two staff members received awards at the annual College of Communications Awards Ceremony. In addition, the college recognized two staff members for 25 years of service and one for an upcoming retirement.

The annual awards recognized people who put the mission of Penn State and the college into practice on a daily basis. 

Faculty members honored were:

  • Steve Manuel, a senior lecturer in the Department of Advertising/Public Relations, who earned the Deans’ Excellence Award for Teaching;
  • Curt Chandler, a senior lecturer in the Department of Journalism, who received the Deans’ Excellence Award for Service;
  • Rob Frieden, the Pioneers Chair and professor of telecommunications and law, who was named winner of the Deans’ Excellence Award for Research and Creative Accomplishments;
  • Denise Bortree, an associate professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, and Krishna Jayakar, an associate professor in the Department of Telecommunications, who each earned the Deans’ Excellence Award for Integrated Scholarship; and
  • Linda Feltman and Michael Ryan, as well as Katie Allen, who received the Deans’ Excellence Award for Outstanding Faculty Affiliate.

Katie Kennedy, a staff assistant in the advising office, and Shelley Wilk, an academic adviser, earned the Deans’ Excellence Award for Staff.

The Djung Yune Tchoi Teaching Award, which recognizes graduate students for their work as teachers, went to Tanner Cooke, Azadeh Nazer Fassihi and Fan Yang.

Also recognized for 25 years of service were financial officer Jane Agnelly and coordinator of graduate education Betsy Hall. 

Faculty member Martin Halstuk, an associate professor in the Department of Journalism, who will retire at the end of the academic year, was honored as well.
