Beaver Math Competition ends well for Moon High School

MONACA, Pa. — Students from Moon High School took five of the top six spots in the Penn State Beaver Math Competition on Tuesday.In group competition, Moon Team 1, made up of Ian Tilton, Haley Sims, Nikhil Maheshwari, Sean Kennedy and Zach Tomasic took first place. Montour High School Team 1, made up of Nicole Benigni, Hunter Smutney, David Pan, Rosh Bharthi and Mac Polny, took second place. Moon Team 2, made up of Sam Henry, Kelsey Hall, Jimmy Knepper, Kyle Buzza and Rushman Khazanchi, took third place.Moon swept the individual competition with Zach Tomasic (who won last year as an eighth grader), Jimmy Knepper and Kyle Buzza tied for first.The annual Math Competition is coordinated by Beaver Professor of Mathematics Chris Wu and open to area high schools.This year, 90 students from Moon, Montour, Avonworth, Beaver, Central Valley, Hopewell, Lincoln Park Performing Arts, Rochester, South Side and Western Beaver competed in two rounds of problem solving.
