UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Shannon Monnat, assistant professor of rural sociology, demography and sociology, will give a talk titled “Faces of Addiction: From Prescription Painkillers to Heroin” at the fourth Research Unplugged event of the semester at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in Schlow Centre Region Library in downtown State College.
Heroin and prescription opioid addiction are widespread national problems. Monnat will share her research about the changing face of the American addict, the role of prescription painkillers as gateways drugs, and the pros and cons of legal and medical interventions.
Research Unplugged is in its 12th year of bringing together a broad range of Penn State researchers and the State College community for informal conversation.
All Research Unplugged events are held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public, with complimentary light refreshments.
