Treating Medical Errors: A Medical-Legal Colloquium to be held at Dickinson Law

The Penn State community is invited to register for "Treating Medical Errors: A Medical-Legal Colloquium" on Tuesday, April 5, at Dickinson Law and simulcast to University Park. This inter-professional event features pediatric medicine residents from Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital and students from the Law School.

Together, law students and medical residents will present a medical malpractice trial with pediatricians serving as both expert witnesses and consultants to their legal teams. The morning session, which begins at 9 a.m., consists of an abbreviated civil trial centered on the issues of proving and defending against claims of medical negligence. Two volunteer juries will consider the evidence presented at the trial, and will deliberate over lunch. All other attendees and participants will reflect on the morning experience over lunch. The afternoon session will begin with a reading of the jury verdicts, followed by an opportunity for participants to ask questions of the jurors, a discussion of the merits of the case, and an analysis of the successes and failures of the tort system's approach to treating medical errors. The event is organized by Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic, Medha D. Makhlouf, and Steven J. Wassner, professor of pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine and chief of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Dr. Wassner oversaw the Pediatric Residency Program for 17 years and now leads initiatives to reduce medical errors.

The program will be held live in the Apfelbaum Auditorium in Carlisle and will be simulcast to University Park, Room 110. Join the live webcast approximately 30 minutes prior to the event.
