Present Future: Annual Foundations exhibition in Zoller Gallery Dec. 7-11

December 07, 2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State School of Visual Arts' (SoVA) annual Foundations Area exhibition, Present Future, showcasing the work of first-year students, opens at the Edwin W. Zoller Gallery on Dec. 7. The exhibition, on display through Dec. 11, features a range of works, including drawings, sculptures, installations, and stop-motion animations that first-year students in ART 110S and 111 completed during the fall 2015 semester.

As part of the exhibition, students will create a collaborative wall drawing in the gallery. "The energy and effort that students put into SoVA’s Foundations program is evident throughout the exhibition, which provides a window into the first-year student experience," said Paul Chidester, professor in the School of Visual Arts Foundations program.

The Foundations Area includes two primary courses, Ideas as Images (Art 110s) and Ideas as Objects (Art 111). All incoming students in the School of Visual Arts take both courses, which serve to form a basis of visual knowledge in both two and three dimensions, introducing students to fundamental methods of making and thinking in an environment of exploration and growth. Observation, exploration, translation, and problem-solving are the focus of varied assignments in multiple materials.
