UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The performance of the "Partners in Music" program, a collaborative effort between Penn State and local schools, will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, at Park Forest Middle School, 2180 School Drive in State College. The program includes two fifth-grade bands and one fifth-grade orchestra. Admission is free.

The Partners in Music program creates the opportunity for young instrumentalists and prospective music teachers to make music together. Over six Wednesdays in the fall semester, fifth-grade students from State College Area School District and Our Lady of Victory School rehearse on Penn State's campus, conducted by senior Penn State music education majors.

Begun as a pilot program in 2006, the partnership has grown to include three ensembles (two bands and one string orchestra) consisting of approximately 175 young instrumentalists each year. The students' teachers (Lisa Bevan, Carolyn Gardner, Monica Kenney, Mary Krohn-Smith, Bob LaBarca, Sandy Muller, and Roy Schaeffer) volunteer their time to prepare students in lessons and attend rehearsals.

The Penn State initiative is led by music education professors Linda Thornton and Robert Gardner. Thornton and Gardner were named as joint recipients of the University's 2015 "Community Engagement and Scholarship Award" for their work with the "Partners in Music" program.
