U.S. Naval Academy Band's Jarrod Williams to perform guest tuba recital

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Jarrod Williams, principal tubist with the United States Naval Academy Band, will perform a guest recital at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, in Esber Recital Hall. The recital is part of the Penn State School of Music's 2016 OcTUBAfest celebration, coordinated by tuba/euphonium faculty member Velvet Brown. Admission is free.

Senior Chief Musician Williams is a 1990 graduate of Republic High School in Republic, Missouri. He earned bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Kansas, and he was awarded a doctor of musical arts in tuba performance from the University of Maryland in 2012. His teachers include Robert Loffler, Bill Hartman, Scott Watson, Max Bonecutter, Toby Hanks and David Fedderly.

During his time at the University of Kansas, Williams performed as principal tubist with the symphonic band, wind ensemble, orchestra, jazz ensemble, new music ensemble, tuba consort, and men’s basketball band. He has also played with regional orchestras in Kansas, Missouri and Maryland, served as chairman of the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference Competition Committees in 1998 and 2010, respectively, and performed in such diverse environments as Blues Alley and the Delmarva Chicken Festival.

Williams auditioned and was selected for assignment with the Naval Academy Band in 1996. Following training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, he reported for duty as tubist with the marching band and ceremonial units. He was named principal tubist in 1998. He is the band’s training officer and awards writer. An accomplished arranger, Williams’ transcriptions have been performed by the Naval Academy Band’s tuba quartet, brass quintet, brass ensemble, and ceremonial bands, as well as the Washington Symphonic Brass and Symphonia, a professional tuba ensemble.

Williams has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Award (six awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
