Free cultural series kicks off with Latin dance band Azucar

September 16, 2015

YORK, Pa. -- Penn State York’s free cultural series gets underway Wednesday, Sept. 30, with Azucar, a Latin trio/quartet featuring the song and dance rhythms of the Americas, Puerto Rico and Spain. The performance, set for noon in the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (The Pullo Center), is part of York’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration and is open to the public. The cultural series is sponsored by the Penn State York Office of Student Affairs.

Azucar, which in Spanish means sugar, is known throughout the region for its versatility and superb musicianship. The group's signature sound is sensual, warm and lively.

Joe Herndon, Azucar founder and band leader, was honored with the Pittsburgh Commission on Culture and Tourism Award. Following the publication of his original compositions on two releases by the Pittsburgh Jazz Society, Herndon formed Azucar and dedicated himself to the preservation of Latin music as a vehicle for cultural expression.
Azucar features singer Indira Corales, whose unique vocal-style draws heavily on the rich legacy of indigenous music across Latin America.  As a result of its dedication to Latin roots music, Azucar has been propelled into the mainstream of contemporary world music. Azucar's traditional and original renditions of classic Samba, Bossa nova, Rhumba, Salsa, Meringue, and Bolero have delighted audiences who share the band's enthusiasm for the vibrancy and fiery emotion of Latin music and rhythms.
