UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Schreyer Honors College will celebrate its past, present and future at its annual Founders Day event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, in the Schreyer Courtyard at Atherton Hall. Schreyer scholars, alumni, SHC staff and Penn State faculty and staff are welcome to attend the event, which will begin with remarks from special speakers and feature music, prizes, cake and Scholars Chip ice cream from the Berkey Creamery.

More than 11,000 Penn State graduates have earned the distinction of being a scholar, first through the Honors Program established in 1981 under the guidance of Paul Axt, the founding director. In 1997, William A. and Joan L. Schreyer established the Schreyer Honors College with a $30 million landmark gift to Penn State. A subsequent $25 million gift in 2006 was the lead gift for the Enhancing Honors Education objective in "For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students." With gifts of more then $58 million, the Schreyer’s are one of the largest family donors in Penn State’s history.

Schreyer Honors College promotes academic excellence with integrity, the building of a global perspective, and the creation of opportunities for leadership and civic engagement. Schreyer Honors Scholars, including Gateway Scholars admitted after their first or second year of enrollment, total more than 1,900 students at University Park and 20 Commonwealth campuses. They represent the top 2 percent of students at Penn State who perform well academically and are leaders on campus.
