College initiatives

Editor’s note: The College of Education has gone through some structural and operational changes over the past few years, as a direct result of the Core Council recommendations and the response to those recommendations by the college. The complete Model for Student Recruitment and Retention and the Development and Coordination of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies can be found at this link. In an effort  to more effectively communicate the details of that model, pieces of it will be shared regularly through Connections. As always, your feedback is welcomed at edrelations@psu.edu.

The college has some common goals that are shared across departments. One of these goals is to enhance undergraduate and graduate student experiences in the departments and college as a whole.

To achieve this goal, the college is working to actively recruit students to ensure the presence of the appropriate number of highly qualified students. To that end, the college hired Sarah Moryken as the college’s recruitment and retention coordinator.

Moryken’s position focuses on developing strategies to increase undergraduate, which includes working with multiple departments across the college and the University. A large part of her role is to represent the college at various recruitment events held within the college, on the University Park campus and off campus.

As chair of the Recruitment and Retention Task Force, Moryken works closely with the Education Student Council and the Alumni Society Board to develop innovative and effective recruitment initiatives. She also is working to strengthen efforts to diversify the college’s student body, and actively improve the student experience to minimize attrition.

“I’m thrilled to be in the College of Education working with a dynamic group of people that have been incredibly supportive of the recruitment initiatives I’ve proposed,” Moryken said. “We’re trying a number of new initiatives this year and I’m eager to see how that helps us to build the incoming class and our efforts to increase our enrollment and the diversity within the college.”
