Alter awarded for outstanding research

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Ted Alter, professor of agricultural, environmental, and regional economics, has been awarded the Community Development Society’s (CDS) 2015 Ted K. Bradshaw Outstanding Research Award. This award is presented to a CDS member in recognition of a significant stream of superior research that exemplifies and positively impacts community development practice and represents a lasting contribution to the field.

Alter is Co-Director of the Center for Economic Community Development (CECD) as well as an Adjunct Research Fellow with the Australian Center for Agriculture and Law in the School of Law at The University of New England. Additionally, he serves as Scholar in Residence at the Sustainability Institute and as program head for Penn State’s Intercollege Civic and Community Engagement minor, and he consults on matters that pertain to the Intercollege Sustainability Leadership minor. Alter co-leads the community-led action initiative for a Commonwealth of Australia invasive animal management and control research program. He works closely with the Kettering Foundation conducting research on issues of democracy emphasizing the political economy of democracy including how democracy works or does not work and for whom. A particular focus of this research has been on the role of higher education in fostering democratic values and principles.

The award was presented at the 46th Annual International Conference held in Lexington, KY July 19-22, 2015.
