Sanjay Srinivasan has been named the inaugural John and Willie Leone Family Chair in Energy and Mineral Engineering at Penn State. Srinivasan joined the faculty in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering on July 1, 2015.

“We are excited that professor Srinivasan will be joining our department. He is an international expert in the application of geostatistics to petroleum and natural gas engineering, which will complement the department’s existing breadth of research,” said Turgay Ertekin, head of the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and holder of the George E. Trimble Chair in Earth and Mineral Sciences. “Named professorships recognize extraordinary excellence and he will be an exceptional addition to our faculty.”

Srinivasan’s primary research focus is in the area of petroleum reservoir characterization and improved management of recovery processes for unconventional resources. In addition to expertise in geostatistics, he is a pioneer in the development of advanced algorithms for integrating production and seismic data in stochastic modeling techniques. He also has developed novel schemes for improved seismic characterization of unconventional reservoirs and is interested in field scale characterization of geological carbon dioxide sequestration.

Srinivasan previously was a professor of petroleum and geosystems engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and had held the Frank Jessen Faculty Fellowship in Petroleum Engineering. He is the recipient of many honors and awards, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Faculty Grant for PhD Pipeline, the SPE Southwestern North America Regional Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award, the SPE award for outstanding technical editor for his work with the SPE Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering journal. He is the associate editor of Mathematical Geosciences and is a member of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the International Geostatistics Congress.

Srinivasan holds a B.Tech. degree in petroleum engineering from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, a master of science in petroleum engineering from University of Southern California and a doctorate in petroleum engineering from Stanford University.

Established by John and Willie Leone, the John and Willie Leone Family Chair in Energy and Mineral Engineering was created to enhance integration of engineering and business disciplines.
