New scholarship will honor Smeal faculty member Robert Novack

John J. Coyle, founding director of the Center for Supply Chain Research at Smeal and professor emeritus of business administration at Penn State, is spearheading fundraising efforts for a new undergraduate scholarship named for Robert Novack, associate professor of supply chain and information systems.

Contributions are still being sought to enhance the impact of the scholarship. Endowed scholarships provide long-term support for students, regardless of economic fluctuations. They exist in perpetuity, helping generations of students to fully engage in campus life and prepare for their futures.

“For almost 30 years, Bob Novack has played an important role and made significant contributions to establishing a recognized brand for the logistics and supply chain programs at Penn State. That brand connotes excellence to many professionals for the quality of our programs, research and leadership,” Coyle said. “He has also received many awards at the college and University level for his noteworthy teaching and advising.”

Donation options for the scholarship program include multi-year commitments to reach a designated pledge level and outright or cash, one-time contributions. Those wishing to donate should inquire with their employer about potential company matching opportunities. Information about giving can be found online.

“Bob has also played a leadership role in the development of the Center for Supply Chain Research,” Coyle continued. “He has helped to attract and maintain corporate sponsors, develop and teach executive education programs. I believe one of his most important contributions is his role as a mentor. He is the consummate advisor. Students flock to him for academic assistance and career counseling.”

Novack has received multiple awards and honors connected to both his contributions to the supply chain field and his teaching, including the Pashek Award for Outstanding Service to the Field, being named a member of the Distinguished Honors Faculty by the Schreyer Honors College, and being awarded the Atherton Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award by the University.

Acknowledging his strong connection to students throughout his career at Smeal, the Robert A. Novack Scholarship for Supply Chain will be awarded to undergraduates enrolled or planning to enroll in the Smeal College of Business who have achieved superior academic records or who manifest promise of outstanding success and who are majoring in or are planning to major in supply chain and information systems. First preference will be given to students who have been accepted to the Sapphire Academic Leadership Program.

Sapphire provides unique academic content and co-curricular leadership and professional development opportunities to high-achieving Smeal undergraduates.
