UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. —The University Libraries now provide access to SNL energy, a valuable resource for up-to-date, detailed data on the North American energy industry. The database covers the coal, natural gas, electric power and renewables sectors, offering news, pricing, financial data and energy company information.

SNL Energy can be accessed from the Libraries’ A to Z database list or directly at http://alias.libraries.psu.edu/ERESOURCES/PSU01906. First-time users will need to create an individual account with SNL (no cost for Penn State users).

Linda Musser, Distinguished Librarian and head of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Library, said that this latest database — a collaborative purchase across six Penn State units — offers much of value to researchers, faculty and students. Energy, business and finance majors will find the information particularly useful.

“The dataset is comprehensive and detailed. For example, it includes data at the asset-level, about specific electricity generators. Educators and researchers across Penn State can rely on these data to monitor the trends in the electricity, coal, natural gas and other energy industries, and to perform techno-economic modeling at local, state and national scales,” said Musser.

Data are available daily and weekly and can be downloaded to spreadsheets for further analysis. In addition, a number of industry newsletters are available, including Daily Coal Report, Daily Gas Report, FERC Gas Report, Gas Utility Weekly, Energy Finance Daily and others.
