April volunteer opportunities abound for students

Penn State Berks students will be “lending their paws for a good cause” as they volunteer at a variety of nonprofit organizations during the academic year. The following is a list of community service initiatives in April.

-- Wednesday, April 8, beginning at 5 p.m.: Students can sign up in Campus Life to cook and serve dinner at Opportunity House. The van will leave campus at 5 p.m.

-- Friday, April 10, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.: Students can sign up in teams or as individuals to participate in Camp Out for Hunger. For a donation of five canned goods or $5, students will camp out on the Perkins Plaza to raise awareness for hunger and homelessness in our community. All proceeds with go directly to the Berks Coalition for Hunger and Homelessness.

-- Saturday, April 11, The Student Government Association is holding a Day of Service at Gring's Mill to help clean up their facilities. 

-- Wednesday, April 22, beginning at 4 p.m.: Students can sign up with Berks Cares to help with an after school Reading Enrichment program at the Olivet Boys and Girls Club at the Police Athletic League in Reading. Students will be reading to the kids and doing crafts with them as they relate to the selected readings.

-- Monday, April 27: The students of Berks Cares will be collaborating with Animal Rescue League to hold an Adopt-A-Human Day. The details of this event are still being confirmed.
