Women's tennis hosts pair of ranked conference foes

Fresh off of their weekend sweep over No. 47 Maryland and Rutgers, the No. 71 Penn State women's tennis team hosts No. 43 Indiana and No. 28 Purdue at the Indoor Center. The Nittany Lions face the Hoosiers at 4 p.m. Friday and the Boilermakers at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Scouting Indiana The No. 43 Hoosiers visit Happy Valley after defeating the Iowa Hawkeyes 4-3. Indiana enters Friday on a two-match win streak. Indiana's strength this season is their singles play, where as a team they are 57-33 during the spring. Alecia Kauss is 10-5 from the second singles position while in the third and fourth positions, Paula Gutierrez is a combined 12-3. In doubles, Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith are a combined 10-2 from the second and third positions.

Scouting Purdue The Boilermakers enter the weekend on an eight match win streak, including victories over No. 38 ranked Arkansas, No. 54 Memphis, No. 45 Indiana, and their most recent 4-3 victory over No. 58 Columbia. Purdue owns the 55th ranked doubles team of Daniela Vidal and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum. The duo is 12-2 this year, including a seven-match win streak.

In the RankingsIn the latest ITA team rankings, Penn State was ranked No. 71. This is the first time the blue and white has cracked the rankings since February 18, 2015 when the Nittany Lions were ranked No. 65. The blue and white have posted some impressive wins on the season, including victories over then No. 37 Illinois 4-3 and No. 47 Maryland. Penn State has also battled hard against ranked teams, including 4-3 defeats from then No. 23 Northwestern, No. 43 Columbia and No. 55 Marshall.

Next Time OutThe Nittany Lions have scheduled another home match on Saturday, April 4 when St. Bonaventure comes to town. The match is set for 1 p.m.
