Sustainability Institute offering internships for undergraduates

February 25, 2015

New, part-time internships are available through Penn State’s Sustainability Institute.

The Sustainability Institute, founded in 2012, integrates sustainability into the University’s research, teaching, outreach and operations to prepare students, faculty and staff to be sustainability leaders.

The Institute executes and oversees initiatives such as the Sustainable Communities Collaborative, the Reinvention Fund, the Sustainability Leadership Minor and Green Paws and Green Teams programs.

There are four internship opportunities currently available for undergraduate students.

The Sustainability Institute is requesting applications for two communications internships -- one for summer 2015 and one for the 2015-16 academic year. Interns will be responsible for researching and writing content about sustainability efforts at Penn State for social media, the website and news media.

"Being an intern for the Sustainability Institute has been a wonderful experience for me," said Pamela Gramlich, a senior advertising/public relations major and current communications intern with the Institute. “I have been given the opportunity to plan and execute my own communications campaigns, to develop communications skills across a broad context, and most importantly, to be a respected member of a team where my opinion is not only heard, but valued."

The Institute also is seeking a programmatic intern for the summer of 2015.  This intern will assist with the Green Paws program, the Green Teams Program and the Sustainability Communities Collaborative. Over the three-month period, the intern will contribute to the preparation of annual reports, the creation of toolkits, the management of program webpages and the planning of events.

Finally, there is an opening for a Sustainable Communities Collaborative intern for the 2015-16 academic year. This intern will assist with the preparation of documents and materials for various stakeholders including faculty, community partners and Penn State campus partners.

Autumn Strausbaugh, a senior in labor and employment relations, has interned with the Sustainability Institute for the past year. She began as a sustainable communities collaborative intern and now works on various Sustainability Institute Initiatives.

“Every day is a good opportunity to learn something new,” Strausbaugh said regarding her internship experience. “There are so many intelligent people with different backgrounds at the institute. The internship has given me different perspectives on sustainability.”

Information about the internships and details about how to apply can be found in the links above. Applications will be accepted until Friday, March 13. All internships are paid.
