Penn State York’s Multicultural Club, Diversity Committee and Teaching International have joined forces for a celebration of Carnival on Thursday, Feb. 12, beginning at noon and continuing throughout the day. Events will take place in the Conference Center of the Main Classroom Building and are free and open to the public. Carnival in Brazil, and other countries around the world, is similar to the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans.“Teaching International's theme this year is Brazil and energy, so the Multicultural Club decided to collaborate with the diversity committee to highlight Brazil and bring a piece of one of the largest events in the world, Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, to York,” said Aruba Tariq, a Penn State York student and president of the Multicultural Club.Beginning at noon and continuing until 1 p.m., those who attend can participate in various activities including learning to dance the samba and making masks to wear later in the day during the Carnival party. Mask-making continues from 4 to 5 p.m., with samba dance lessons again from 6 to 7 p.m. The Carnival party, featuring dance, masks, decorations and food, is from 7 to 9 p.m.

Teaching International is a curriculum and campus globalization initiative at Penn State York. Each year, the campus selects a country or region and a theme as a focus for instructional and co-curricular events.
