Students ready to volunteer in the community

February 04, 2015

Penn State Berks students will be “lending their paws for a good cause” as they volunteer at a variety of nonprofit organizations during the academic year. The following is a list of community service initiatives in February:

-- 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11. Students can sign up with Berks Cares to help the after-school Reading Enrichment program with the Olivet Boys and Girls Club. Students will be reading to the kids and doing crafts with them that relate to the selected readings.

-- 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. Students can sign up in Campus Life to volunteer at the Animal Rescue League. Student will be walking dogs and helping with other cleaning and administrative tasks.

-- Tuesday, Feb. 17. Berks Cares is hosting a Random Acts of Kindness Day on campus. The campus community is invited to join in by doing random acts of kindness, such as holding doors for others, telling someone to have a good day, buying coffee or tea for someone at Tully's or the Cyber Cafe, giving someone a genuine compliment on Twitter or Facebook, standing up for someone if he or she is being bullied and giving someone a hug. More examples can be found at http://andthenwesaved.com/random-acts-of-kindness-ideas/.

-- 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25. Students can sign up in Campus Life to cook dinner at Opportunity House. The van will leave campus at 5 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to serve the residents as well.
