Lehigh Valley students finalize dancer send-off plans as THON approaches

Canning has concluded, THONvelopes are in the mail, and the fundraising deadline for THON 2015 is swiftly approaching. As the final donations are tallied up, Penn State Lehigh Valley Benefiting THON, the local campus’ student group, is finalizing plans to keep its dancers motivated and focused heading into THON weekend, which takes place Feb. 20-22 at University Park’s Bryce Jordan Center. The culmination of this planning is Dancer Send-Off, a pep rally of sorts, will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 19 in room 135 at the campus in Center Valley. The event is free and open to all THON supporters.

The Lehigh Valley campus will be represented by three dancers this year -- Austin Boccardi, Amanda McGee and Janelle Placencia -- who will dance continuously for 46 hours alongside roughly 700 other Penn State students to raise money for pediatric cancer research and treatments.

“The Send-Off is going to be explosive,” said campus THON chair Megan Marzella. “We hope it’ll be the biggest we’ve had.”

Campus dancers are chosen through a rigorous application process that includes logging canning hours and other fundraising participation, as well as essays and interviews. Last year, Penn State Lehigh Valley raised more than $46,000 toward the overall total of more than $13.3 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey.

A THON reveal viewing party sponsored by the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society for the local community is planned from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., Feb. 22, at ArtsQuest in Bethlehem.
