Wrestlers ready for two-dual road swing through Michigan

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- No. 7 Penn State (8-2, 4-2 B1G) will be on the road this weekend, traveling to No. 15 Michigan (5-3, 3-2 B1G) on Friday, Jan. 30, for a 7 p.m. dual before heading to Michigan State (4-8, 0-5 B1G) for a 2 p.m. meeting on Sunday, Feb. 1.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a tough 17-16 loss to No. 2 Minnesota on Sunday. Each team won five bouts in the dual but the Gophers grabbed two major decisions to one for Penn State to steal the victory. Penn State is led by a young line-up that featured four freshmen and two sophomores in the battle against Minnesota. Eight Penn Staters are ranked heading into a two-dual road swing through the state of Michigan.

Junior Jordan Conaway is 17-3 at 125 and ranked No. 8 nationally while sophomore Jimmy Gulibon is 15-4 and No. 9 at 133. Red-shirt freshman Kade Moss mans the helm at 141 and is 15-11 overall. Sophomore Zack Beitz is 11-6 and ranked No. 18 at 149 and senior Dylan Alton is 8-3 and ranked No. 8 at 157. Red-shirt freshman Garett Hammond sports an 18-7 record at 165. Senior Matt Brown is ranked No. 3 at 174 with a 17-2 record while red-shirt freshman Matt McCutcheon is 19-8 and No. 17 at 184. Junior Morgan McIntosh is ranked No. 5 at 197 with an 18-2 mark. Senior Jimmy Lawson is ranked No. 6 at 285 with a 10-0 record while classmate Jon Gingrich is 13-1 at 285 as well.

Michigan comes in ranked No. 15 in Intermat's TPI and is 5-3, 3-2 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have seven ranked wrestlers. Rossi Bruno is No. 8 at 133 with a 14-5 record. Two freshman are ranked for the Wolverines with George Fisher No. 17 at 141 with a 20-11 record and Alex Pantaleo ranked No. 9 at 149 with a 15-3 mark. Brian Murphy is 17-7 at 157 and ranked No. 13 while Domenic Abounader is 13-5 and No. 10 at 184. Max Huntley is 14-3 at 197 and ranked No. 8 and Adam Coon is 21-3 and ranked No. 7 at 285.

Michigan State enters the weekend with a 4-8 overall record, 0-5 in Big Ten action. The Spartans are idle on Friday night while Penn State is at Michigan. Michigan State is led by senior John Rizqallah, who is 13-5 at 184, senior Nick McDiarmid who is 6-9 at 197 and senior Nick Proctor, who is 11-9 at 174. Freshman Mitch Rogaliner is 13-8 at 125 and junior Roger Wildmo is 15-11 at 165.

Penn State leads the all-time series with Michigan 28-24, including the last four meetings. Penn State won 32-9 last season in Ann Arbor on Feb. 2, 2014. The Nittany Lions own an 18-9 advantage in the series with Michigan State, including the last nine. Penn State won 42-3 last year in East Lansing on Jan. 31, 2014. This will mark the second straight year that Penn State has made a swing through Michigan and Michigan State on Super Bowl weekend and the fourth time in the last five years Penn State has wrestled at Michigan State as part of the Big Ten schedule.

Penn State's next home dual will take place in the Bryce Jordan Center when Iowa visits for a 1 p.m. dual on Sunday, Feb. 8 (the event is sold out).
