Penn State York's Lion Ambassadors help campus and community

Penn State York’s Lion Ambassadors are members of a busy student organization that works to promote the campus to prospective students, their parents and the community. Not only does this group support the campus, but they also are active in the community, participating in a variety of projects from holiday caroling at a local nursing home to collecting soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House."Penn State really encourages being a productive member of your community, one that engages in the betterment of society in any way possible, so to me, this is why community service is an essential part of being a Lion Ambassador and being a Penn State student,” said Amy Hammonds, president of the Penn State York Lion Ambassadors and a senior majoring in communication arts and sciences. “Lion Ambassadors are the best of the best, and we value being able to give back to the community that we live in,” she said.During the holiday season, the group went Christmas caroling at Country Meadows, a nursing home in Leaders Heights, Pennsylvania, visited with the residents, and decorated stockings to help brighten the holidays for them.The 30-member student group is currently collecting soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The tabs are delivered to the Ronald McDonald House, which receives cash for the metal in the tabs after the tabs have been melted down. The money from the melted tabs is used to help pay electric bills and other expenses for the organization. The York Lion Ambassadors have participated in this program for a number of years to support the important work of the Ronald McDonald House.  Since 1974, the Ronald McDonald House’s network of local Chapters has been making children happier and healthier by keeping families together -- giving them a place to rest and refresh, a place that feels like home.These programs, tailored to meet the urgent needs of each community, can now be found in more than 62 countries and regions across the globe.The Lion Ambassadors also participate in an annual campus clean-up on Earth Day each year.  The Lion Ambassadors partner with the Student Government Association (SGA) to spruce-up the campus.Lion Ambassadors are a part of the Student Government Association (SGA) on campus and also work closely with the admissions office to provide campus tours, fundraisers and social events on behalf of the campus.
