Wrestling visits Rutgers, hosts Purdue

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Nittany Lions (6-1, 2-1 B1G), ranked No. 7 in the latest Intermat Tournament Power Index, have yet another a split conference weekend in store. The Nittany Lions visit No. 25 Rutgers (9-3, 0-3 B1G) on Friday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. Penn State returns to Rec hall on Sunday, Jan. 18, when Purdue (7-4, 0-2 B1G) comes to town for a 1 p.m. dual.

The Nittany Lions are coming off a 1-1 weekend. Penn State downed No. 23 Indiana 42-3 last Friday night and then travelled to No. 3 Ohio State on Sunday and fell 22-15. Sanderson's squad features a young line-up that includes three red-shirt freshmen and two sophomores. Eight Lions are ranked by Intermat, including six in the top 10. Jordan Conaway is 14-3 and No. 8 at 125, Jimmy Gulibon is 14-2 and No. 7 at 133, freshman Kade Moss is 15-8 at 141, Zack Beitz is 9-5 and No. 17 at 149, Dylan Alton is 7-2 and No. 7 at 157, freshman Garett Hammond is 16-6 at 165, Matt Brown is 14-2 and No. 4 at 174, freshman Matt McCutcheon is 17-7 and No. 16 at 184, Morgan McIntosh is 15-2 and No. 6 at 197 and Jimmy Lawson is 8-0 and No. 6 at 285. Jon Gingrich is 12-1 at 285 and also ranked in the top 10 in many national polls.

Rutgers will enter the dual meet on Friday with a No. 25 national ranking in the Intermat TPI. The Scarlet Knights are 9-3 overall, 0-3 in the Big Ten. Rutgers' line-up is also young, with no seniors listed among the probables. Rutgers could start a freshman, five sophomores and four juniors. Sophomore Anthony Ashnault is 15-3 and ranked No. 7 at 141, junior Anthony Perrotti is 12-5 and No. 18 at 157, sophomore Phillip Bakuckas is 15-6 and No. 20 at 174 and junior Billy Smith is 9-2 and No. 13 at 285.

Purdue, which hosts Northwestern on the same night Penn State is at Rutgers, is 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers have a veteran line-up featuring four seniors and three juniors. Junior Danny Sabatello is 18-4 and No. 20 at 133, junior Doug Welch is 20-6 and No. 20 at 157 and senior Braden Atwood is 9-4 and No. 15 at 197.

Penn State leads the all-time series with Rutgers 17-0. The Nittany Lions won the last meeting, a 34-0 victory back on Feb. 24, 2013, at Rutgers. This will be the first meeting between the two schools as Big Ten brethren. Penn State leads the all-time series with Purdue 13-1-1. The Nittany Lions won the last meeting, a 34-3 victory at Purdue last year on Jan. 12, 2014. Penn State also won the last meeting in Rec Hall, a 35-3 victory on Jan. 20, 2013.

Penn State will host Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. in its next dual meet. A very limited number of standing room only (SRO) tickets are available for some Penn State's Rec Hall duals.
