Skinner to deliver Larson Distinguished Transportation Lecture

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute has announced that Robert Skinner will deliver the Thomas D. Larson Distinguished Transportation Lecture at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

The lecture, titled “Remembering Our Stories: 30 Years of Evolution and Innovation in Transportation,” is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Skinner has been the executive director of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies since 1994. The TRB is a nonprofit organization that promotes transportation innovation by sponsoring professional meetings and publications, administering applied research programs and conducting policy studies. Prior to becoming executive director, he directed TRB’s policy study activities and spent a number of years with a transportation consulting firm.

Skinner recently chaired the special advisory panel for the Stem-to-Stern Safety Review of the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project. He serves on a number of university and research advisory groups, including the visiting committee for the Engineering Systems Division at MIT, the board of trustees for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Virginia, the advisory board for the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida, the external review committee for the MIT-Portugal Project and the advisory board for the School of Public Policy at George Mason University.

A registered professional engineer, Skinner earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia and received a master’s degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Tom Larson was a Penn State student, professor, and co-founder and director of the Larson Institute at Penn State before rising to statewide and national prominence, helping to shape the direction and management of the nation’s transportation system and policy in the interstate era. The Larson Lecture recognizes his singular contributions to the University and to the field of transportation.
