Corien Bakermans, assistant professor of microbiology at Penn State Altoona, served as a member of the second special regions science analysis group for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) that was charged with re-evaluating the definition of special regions on Mars where Earth microbes could potentially reproduce.

Bakermans was recruited to the group based on her expertise, research on cold-adapted bacteria from Earth’s Polar regions and previous associations with NASA.

The group’s report, "A New Analysis of Mars ‘Special Regions’: Findings of the Second MEPAG Special Regions Science Analysis Group (SR-SAG2)" was published Nov. 18 in the journal Astrobiology. The full report can be viewed at http://online.liebertpub.com/toc/ast/14/11.
