November 11, 2014

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Penn State Hershey Medical Center Executive Director Alan Brechbill has named Paul E. Seale to serve as managing director for hospital operations.

As managing director, Seale will report to Brechbill and oversee day-to-day hospital operations, including more than two dozen clinical and support services departments. Working with Penn State Hershey’s Center for Enterprise Innovation, he will have responsibility for overseeing and implementing strategies to achieve $125 million in revenue and cost improvements over the next three years and will work closely with the organization’s director of patient and visitor experience to enhance overall customer service and patient satisfaction.

Seale currently serves as chief operating officer for Upstate Medical University’s University Hospital in Syracuse, New York, a 715-bed public academic medical center with 5,300 employees operating on two campuses. Since 2006, Seale has been responsible for the daily operations of all ancillary professional and support services for the hospital, which serves as a regional resource, Level I Trauma Center and Burn Center for 17 counties across central New York.

His administrative responsibility also included oversight of construction programs.  In the past five years, Upstate has added over $250 million of new facilities, expanding the hospital by 300,000 square feet and creating 209 adult and pediatric private rooms. The construction of the Golisano Children’s Hospital was completed in 2009. The recent addition of the 100,000-square-foot Upstate Cancer Center was completed in the fall of 2014.

Seale’s prior experience includes serving as president and CEO of New Island Hospital, a 150-bed community hospital in Bethpage, New York, from 1999 to 2005. He was also the chief operating officer for Stony Brook University Medical Center from 1995 to 1999. Before becoming COO, he held several administrative roles at Stony Brook over a 17-year period, including associate director of cardiovascular services. Seale was the 35th employee hired at Stony Brook and was part of the initial leadership team that opened the academic medical center on Long Island in 1980.

Seale is a graduate of Gettysburg College and holds a master’s in health care administration from Long Island University. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Seale replaces Matt Wain, who served in the position when it was titled chief administrative officer for adult and children’s hospitals. Administrator Michelle Del Pizzo has been serving in the role on an interim basis since Wain’s departure last year and will resume her full-time duties as administrator for the departments of emergency medicine, medicine, pediatrics, radiology and surgery with Seale’s arrival in January.

Seale has been an active member of the HANYS COO Forum, Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network Advisory Board, and is a member of the Senior Operations Officer Council of the University Health System Consortium. He also has been the recipient of an Honorary Membership in Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow and is an active alumnus of Gettysburg College.

Seale and his wife Jean have two grown children, who reside on Long Island and in Washington, D.C. He will begin his duties at Penn State Hershey on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015.
