Author Helen Boyd to speak at Penn State Behrend

For more than a decade, writer Helen Boyd has been a leader and advocate on transgender issues. She voices her opinions through her blog as well as her memoirs, “My Husband Betty” and “She’s Not the Man I Married.”

On Thursday, Oct. 23, Boyd will discuss her role as a LGBTQ advocate when she visits Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, for a special presentation.

Boyd’s talk, “Trans 101,” takes place at 7 p.m. in the Reed Auditorium of the college’s Reed Union Building. It is free and open to the public.

Both of Boyd’s books discuss what it is like being partnered to a transgender person. She maintains a blog (en|Gender) that covers LGBTQ issues and has appeared on PBS, the “Dr. Keith Ablow Show” and Dan Savage's “Savage Love” podcast. She currently teaches gender studies at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.

Boyd’s presentation is sponsored by the Women’s Studies/Gender Studies minor with co-sponsorship from Women Today, the Human Relations Programming Council, and the English, creative writing, psychology, communication and childhood and early adolescent education majors.
