Lehigh Valley to commence first canning weekend, Penny Wars for THON 2015

October 14, 2014

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Penn State Lehigh Valley students will hold their first canning weekend to raise money for THON 2015 from Oct. 17 to 19. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., students will collect donations at Lehigh and Oxford streets in Allentown, Cedar Crest and Tilghman streets in Allentown, and outside Dunkin’ Donuts locations in Dorneyville, Trexlertown and near the Ciocca Subaru dealership in Allentown.

Canning is an annual tradition that solicits donations from area residents for THON, which benefits The Four Diamonds Fund, Conquering Childhood Cancer, at the Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey.

Leading up to the canning weekend, the campus THON team is holding its annual Penny Wars from Oct. 13 to 16 in Centre Hall. Throughout the week, students can deposit coins in cans that each represent a THON executive board member; pennies count for positive points and any other coin for negative points corresponding to the coin’s value. The executive with the most negative points will be declared the loser and will accept a light-hearted but potentially humorous task as a result.

THON 2015 will take place Feb. 20 to 22 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus in State College. More than 700 students from Penn State campuses and organizations will dance continuously for 46 hours to raise money for pediatric cancer research and treatments.
